What is physio teleconsultation?

Physio teleconsultation is the ability to get an assessment, receive a personalised exercise program and talk with a sports physiotherapist, without travelling to a clinic. HOPP combines a digital program that adjusts every day to how you feel with, depending on the plan you choose, video calls with a FIFA-certified physio.

In official texts, the precise term for physiotherapists is “telecare” rather than “teleconsultation” (reserved for doctors), but in everyday use the two are used interchangeably. What matters is what it actually changes for you: no travel, no waiting room, a follow-up that adjusts to your daily life.

What can be treated remotely, and what can’t

Physio teleconsultation isn’t a universal solution: some care remains the exclusive domain of an in-person session.

Possible remotely

  • Assessment and diagnostic orientation
  • Strengthening and mobility program
  • Training load management
  • Progress tracking and daily adjustment
  • Advice on ice, compression and elevation in the acute phase
  • Referral to a clinical exam, ultrasound or MRI if needed

Not possible remotely

  • Massage and manual techniques
  • Passive mobilisation of a joint
  • Care requiring a direct physical exam
  • Palpation, osteopathy, acupuncture or taping applied by a practitioner

How does a HOPP teleconsultation program work?

Step 1: the online assessment

You answer a guided questionnaire (pain location, mechanism, symptoms) that identifies your likely injury within minutes, without waiting for an appointment.

Step 2: a program that adjusts every day

Every morning, you log how you feel (RPE). The program automatically adjusts the day’s load, exactly like a physio following you day to day would.

Step 3: a video call if needed

With the Expert plan, you can video call a FIFA-certified sports physio to adjust your program or check in on your return to activity.

In practice, a guided at-home session looks like this: you follow the day’s exercises in front of your screen, with the option to share what you see with a physio on video if your situation calls for it.

Why choose a FIFA-certified physio for your teleconsultation?

HOPP programs are designed by FIFA-certified sports physiotherapists, a specific qualification in high-level sports trauma care, distinct from general training.

  • Training focused on sports injury and return to play, not just everyday pain
  • Real clinical experience, working directly with athletes of all levels
  • An approach that prioritises a progressive return to sporting movement, not just the disappearance of pain
Physio insight: the FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine specifically trains practitioners in the prevention, diagnosis and management of injuries linked to intensive sports practice, with a focus on a safe return to competition.

Which injuries can be treated with physio teleconsultation?

Most common sports injuries respond well to remote follow-up, as long as a medical emergency has first been ruled out.

  • Tendinopathies (shoulder, knee, adductors…)

  • Muscle pain and injuries (soreness, contractures, tears, strains, pulls)
  • Mild ankle sprain, once a fracture has been ruled out
  • Bruises, haematomas and muscle cramps
  • Remote post-surgical rehabilitation, alongside surgical follow-up
  • Chronic pain and stiffness (back, hip, knee, arthritis) linked to sports practice

If you’re unsure how serious an injury is, see a doctor before starting a remote program: visible deformity suggesting a fracture, total loss of function, sudden and intense pain, neurological signs (tingling, loss of sensation) or associated breathing difficulty. A clinical exam, or even an ultrasound or MRI, remains a doctor’s role: HOPP will direct you to that consultation if needed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a prescription for a physio teleconsultation?

No, not to start a HOPP program. A prescription may however be required if you want classic physiotherapy sessions covered by your health insurance.

What is the difference between a physio teleconsultation and an in-person session?

Professor Michel Tousignant and his team at the University of Sherbrooke (Canada) showed that telerehabilitation was just as effective as in-person care, including for complex post-surgical follow-up (knee or shoulder replacement). The main difference concerns manual techniques, which are impossible at a distance.

How does the first session with HOPP work?

You start by answering a guided online assessment (location, mechanism, symptoms) that identifies your likely injury. HOPP then gives you a personalised exercise program that adjusts every day based on how you feel.

Can full rehabilitation be done remotely?

For the vast majority of sports injuries, yes: assessment, strengthening, mobility and load progression all work very well with guided independence. Manual techniques (massage, passive mobilisation) remain the exclusive domain of an in-person session, though.

Is HOPP’s physio teleconsultation reimbursed?

HOPP is not a state-regulated medical act: the program is offered at a fixed price, with no reimbursement from public health insurance. Some private health plans offer a wellness or complementary medicine allowance that may cover part of the program, check directly with your provider.

Can I talk directly to a physio during my program?

Yes, with the Expert plan, which includes two video calls with a FIFA-certified sports physio in addition to the full program and its daily adjustment.

How do I ease an ankle sprain or a bruise while waiting for my session?

In the acute phase, apply the basics: relative rest, ice (never directly on the skin), light compression and elevation of the limb. A brace can help stabilise a mild ankle sprain. These steps help while you wait for your assessment, they don’t replace an evaluation if the pain is intense or isn’t improving.
