Muscle strengthening, a key technique for returning to activity

After an injury, muscle loses strength faster than you’d think. Muscle strengthening is one of the central techniques in HOPP programmes: it restores lost strength, secures every stage of your rehab and prepares your body to get back to sport without exposing you to injury risk again.

Muscle strengthening is one of the 9 rehab techniques used in HOPP programmes. It’s present in almost every care pathway, whatever the injury, because a weakened muscle is one of the leading causes of relapse after too early a return.

What is muscle strengthening?

Strengthening a muscle isn’t just “doing sport”. It’s working a specific muscle group, with a calibrated load and number of reps, to progressively give it back the strength it lost after an injury or a period of immobilisation.

In the HOPP app, every strengthening exercise targets a precise area, such as the hip, knee or ankle, with sets and reps suited to your recovery stage. Difficulty increases session after session, never at random.

Why it’s essential in rehab

After an injury, muscle strength around the affected area drops very quickly, sometimes within just a few days. Getting back to sport without having restored it directly exposes you to relapse. Muscle strengthening therefore isn’t optional: it’s a safety step before any return.

What strengthening gives you

  • Preventing relapse by restoring the strength lost around the injury
  • Correcting the muscle imbalances that may have contributed to the injury
  • Securing each step before moving to the next
  • Preparing your body for the real demands of your sport

How HOPP builds strengthening into your programme

Muscle strengthening can’t be improvised: too early or too intense, it can worsen the injury; too late or too light, it delays your return. HOPP progresses your exercises in stages, from the simplest (on the floor, unloaded) to the most demanding (standing, moving, loaded), at your own pace.

Every morning, you say how you feel, and your strengthening programme adjusts automatically: a bit more load if all is well, a bit less if the area is complaining. It’s the same dosing principle that protects your muscles from too abrupt a return.

Frequently asked questions

Can strengthening worsen my injury?

No, if the load and progression are suitable. It’s precisely to avoid this risk that HOPP progresses your exercises in stages and adjusts your programme based on how you feel every morning.

Do I need weight training equipment at home?

No. Most of the exercises HOPP offers use bodyweight or simple equipment (a resistance band, small dumbbells). The programme adapts to what you have on hand.

How long before I see results?

The first strength gains are generally felt after a few weeks of regular practice. The pace depends on your injury, your starting point and your consistency.

Does HOPP strengthening replace my physio sessions?

No, HOPP is a complementary tool that helps you understand your injury and progress day to day between sessions. It doesn’t replace a doctor’s opinion or in-clinic follow-up if needed.

What should I do if an exercise becomes painful?

Slight discomfort can be normal in rehab, but sharp pain should always lead you to reduce the load or take a break. HOPP helps you tell the two apart and adapt your programme accordingly.

Is the programme really suited to my level?

Yes. The 3-minute HOPP test factors in your injury, your sport and your level to offer you a personalised strengthening programme, not generic content.
